Fighting for Our Community

Families across our communities are working hard and still struggling to keep up. I believe we need practical solutions that make everyday life more affordable, from housing and childcare to groceries, utilities, and property taxes.

High Cost of Living

Too many people feel ignored by the systems and leaders that are supposed to represent them. I believe leadership starts with listening, showing up, and making sure everyday voices have a real seat at the table.

Making sure people are heard

Healthcare should include the whole person. That means expanding access to mental health support, affordable dental care, addiction recovery resources, and quality physical healthcare, especially in rural communities where services are often limited.

We can support constitutional rights while also raising the standards for gun safety and community protection. I believe in practical, responsible approaches that keep firearms out of dangerous situations while respecting lawful gun owners and rural traditions.

Over the years I've worked alongside families navigating mental health challenges, recovery, the justice system, poverty, and barriers to basic support. I've served in leadership roles across Minnesota focused on these topics, because I believe the people closest to the problems should have a voice in the solutions.

<h4>Leadership starts with listening.</h4>I never expected to run for office. My path here started with lived experience, recovery, advocacy, and showing up for people in my community who felt overlooked or unheard because I knew what that felt like too.Too many people feel disconnected from government and unheard by the people elected to represent them. Rural communities are often left out of conversations and decisions that directly impact their lives, and many people feel like leadership only shows up during election season.Throughout my work in advocacy, peer support, recovery, and community leadership, I’ve learned that trust is built through relationships, honesty, and consistency. People may not always agree on every solution, but most people want the same basic things: safety, opportunity, stability, and a voice that matters.I believe leadership should be accessible, transparent, and rooted in real conversations with the people most impacted by decisions. I want District 1B to have a representative who listens, shows up, and stays connected to the realities families are facing every day.

Making Sure People Are Heard

Jennifer Compeau, a Family Resource Coordinator and health and human services advocate, has announced her candidacy for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 1B.Compeau works at the East Grand Forks Family Resource Center, where she supports families navigating mental health challenges, addiction, housing instability, and complex state and county systems. Her work focuses on strengthening family stability, improving access to services in rural communities, and helping residents understand and navigate the programs intended to support them. In addition to her frontline work, Compeau serves on a statewide advisory council, the local corrections advisory board, and the board of the Minnesota Social Services Association. She is a former ACLU Smart Justice Fellow and was named 2025 Woman of the Year by the Greater Grand Forks Women’s Leadership Cooperative for her contributions to community well‑being and lived‑experience leadership. Compeau said her decision to run is rooted in both her professional background and her personal experience navigating Minnesota’s health, human services, and justice systems. “I’ve worked with families across our region who are trying to access support, and I’ve also been someone who had to navigate these systems myself,” she said. “That dual perspective has shown me where programs succeed, where they fall short, and how gaps in services impact rural families. I believe that lived experience, combined with on‑the‑ground work in health and human services, is essential for ensuring mutual accountability in how government programs are administered.”As a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and longtime advocate in the health and human services field, Compeau brings experience in systems navigation, cross‑agency collaboration, and community‑based support. Her background includes working with families impacted by addiction, mental illness, and justice‑system involvement, as well as participating in statewide policy discussions focused on improving outcomes for rural communities.District 1B includes East Grand Forks, Crookston, Fosston and surrounding areas in northwest Minnesota. The seat will be on the ballot in the upcoming election. Voters should confirm all election information with trusted official sources. Jennifer is Endorsed by the MN DFL House District 1B.

<h4>Working families deserve the chance to get ahead, not just survive.</h4>I know what it feels like to worry about how bills are going to get paid, how to rebuild after hardship, and how exhausting it can be to work hard while still struggling to stay afloat. Those experiences shaped the way I see policy and leadership today.Across District 1B, families are being squeezed by rising costs for housing, groceries, childcare, utilities, healthcare, and property taxes while wages and resources fail to keep pace. People are working multiple jobs, picking up overtime, and still feeling like they can’t get ahead.I believe we need practical solutions that help working families stay stable and build a future here in rural Minnesota. That includes supporting affordable housing development, protecting and investing in rural childcare providers, investing in workforce opportunities, and making sure everyday people are not carrying the burden while large systems and corporations continue to profit.I also believe we need to raise the bar for how assistance programs support working people. Too often, families work hard, earn slightly more, and suddenly lose the supports that helped keep them stable. I’ve seen firsthand how quickly people can fall through the cracks while trying to do everything right. We should be creating pathways forward, not benefit cliffs that punish people for improving their situation. People should be able to work hard, grow, and still receive enough support to make ends meet while they get back on solid ground.

Working families across District 1B are feeling the pressure of rising costs everywhere they turn. I’m committed to practical solutions that make everyday life more affordable while helping people build long-term stability.

<h4>Strong communities and responsible policies can exist together.</h4>Growing up in rural Minnesota, I understand that firearms are part of many families’ traditions, livelihoods, and way of life. My father was an avid hunter and made sure my brother and I completed firearms safety training as soon as we were old enough. Responsible gun ownership, safety, and respect for firearms were values I was raised with, and I respect the important role they play in many rural communities.At the same time, I also know what it’s like to see communities impacted by trauma, violence, addiction, and crisis. Public safety conversations should not be driven by fear or political extremes. They should be grounded in practical solutions that protect both rights and people.I believe we can raise the standards for safety, accountability, and prevention without taking away lawful gun ownership. That includes supporting responsible storage, stronger crisis intervention tools, mental health support, and common-sense approaches that help keep dangerous situations from turning tragic.Public safety also means investing in prevention, youth support, recovery resources, and stronger community connections. Safer communities are built when people feel supported, connected, and seen before they reach a breaking point.

I support responsible gun ownership and respect rural traditions while also believing we can raise the bar for safety, prevention, and accountability to better protect our communities.

<h4>Healthcare should include the whole person.</h4>My work and my personal experiences have shown me how deeply connected mental health, addiction recovery, dental care, and physical healthcare really are. I’ve worked alongside individuals and families trying to navigate systems that are often confusing, inaccessible, and stretched too thin. I’ve also lived through the reality of how untreated trauma, mental health struggles, and lack of support can impact every part of a person’s life.Too many people in rural communities struggle to access even basic care because of provider shortages, long waitlists, transportation barriers, insurance issues, and rising costs. Far too often, people only receive help once they’ve already reached a crisis point.We need stronger investments in community-based mental health services, recovery support, crisis response, and rural healthcare infrastructure. Dental care should not be treated like a luxury. Mental healthcare should not require a crisis before someone can access support. And families should not have to drive hours just to receive basic care.I believe healthcare policy should focus on prevention, accessibility, dignity, and long-term wellbeing so people can get help before problems become emergencies.

Healthcare should include the whole person. I believe rural communities deserve better access to mental health support, recovery services, dental care, and quality healthcare without long waits, impossible costs, or unnecessary barriers.

From families gathering downtown to celebrating local pride and community connection, these small town traditions matter. Excited to spend time connecting with people and celebrating everything that makes communities like Erskine such an important part of District 1B. This event runs Friday June 5th through Sunday June 7th.
